At the end of last Friday I raised the question at work if there was any plan for the weekend considering that Sunday was going to be Father’s Day. One of my colleague said: “well we are going to Mandarin with a bit of dissatisfaction”. Mandarin for people who don’t know, is a sort of chain like all you can eat Chinese restaurant where although there is a good variety of dishes and deserts the quality is not necessarily top one. He also added, that his kids and other relative members like it so he, his father and his grandparent were going for the occasion.

While I was driving back home I couldn’t help to think about the situation to be in a restaurant where one doesn’t even like the type of food to celebrate his day. However, I also thought that he was really lucky to have the opportunity to spend that day with his kids, his father and his grandfather. I am one that unfortunately do not have the same luck like him anymore, both my grandfather and my dad departure long time ago.

It doesn’t matter how and where you are celebrating this day as long as you are privilege enough to be with you love ones, I truly thing that’s what really counts. We always take things for granted and we only realized what we are missing right after we loose them.

I just want to say for all the fathers out there, have a great Father’s Day.

Today an unexpected situation happened when I arrived to the gym where I daily go. I forgot to bring my indoor sport shoes with me. I only had my outside shoes that besides not being allow to use them, they did actually look good when you are in sport outfit. So I had 3 choices, break the rules and do exercise with those shoes, go back home missing one day of gym or actually go without sport shoes and still do my routine. I opted for the last one. Missing a gym day was definitely a no-no although for some that would be the only option. No in my case, so I really struggle between doing my exercise with my shoes or without any. I chose the later because either way I would get notice but the I did not infringe the rules about wearing outside shoes. I am pretty sure some of the people who were there noticed me, but I did not care. I only make sure I was careful enough to avoid any potential injury which actually wouldn’t had made any difference if I was wearing shoes. Anyway, I did have my daily gym and was happy I accomplished what I planned.
I adjusted, improvised, decided and acted against the challenge. That’s the best way to deal with similar situations a lesson that always I will try to keep in mind.

It is this time of the year again where we stop to reflex and get some insights of the year that it is about to end. And like every year we look at the good, the bad and ugly and try to come out with new goals in order to make the new year a better one.
There is nothing wrong about it; moreover, I would think that we as human we all want to grow not only financially, but also spiritually, professionally, as a person. The problem is the way we try to obtain those set of goals. We grew up with the idea that this is the perfect time and for some the only one to make resolutions and goals. According to recent studies 12% of new year resolutions actually get carry on and accomplished until the end of the year the individuals started.

Another think I wanted to highlight is that we focus a lot of what it is lacking, but pay little if none attention to what do we do. We as human being take a lot of things for granted, and we always the hard way to value them when we lost them. Although some people might argue about that this probably it is not the best time of the year to reflect on (Thanksgiving Day might be the day) I think that during these days we should all take a look at those things such as a current job, a good health for your and your family, time with your family and friends, your old or used values, something to eat, freedom, security, peace.

So let’s start focus on those things we do have. Let’s try to improve them, fortify them and make them better. Those are the things we already have so why don’t pay the same attention to maintain them? I hope all of you had a wonderful Holidays and great start on this 2011.
Happy New year everyone and wish you all the best and success!!

Today, another important milestone was reached. The final printing of 2 products that I contributed with their content was finally accomplished. This brings me a great satisfaction because these products represent an original idea I had back on December 2009.

Besides its utility and nice layout, “A Simple Act” also fulfill a personal goal which is trying to make a contribution to the community and society by providing something that inspire them and others in their daily life. The calendar and the agenda, contains inspiring actions to cheer your day or the day of others.

A Simple Act is a product developed and designed by my wife in cooperation with Toronto Star and it will be sold in Chapters-Indigo across Canada very soon. I hope you like it or buy one as a gift for someone special.

Finally saving the best part to the end; one of the illustration happens to be designed by my older son Gabriel (7 at the time of drawing) which made him and us so proud of his talent. I belief he will follow the steps of his talented mom very soon.

Yesterday in the morning my son and I were rushing before dropping him in the school. When we step out of our house right down the entrance my son pointed out a smile face made of some leaves the wind had blown.

Finding smile faces it is not as trivial as it seems to be. It might require some imagination as well as paying detailed attention to our surroundings, but more importantly I think, to have the right attitude.
The lesson I learned from this experience was that if we focus on positive and inspiring things like these smiling faces, they will start appearing everywhere. It is like when you concentrate in the color red for a couple of seconds and then you start noticing red everywhere.

Whether you focus on the negative or the positive it will become self-fulfilling prophecy. Keep looking for the smile faces and they will keep popping out.

Today I was reading a blog about the simple joys in our life. The author made an interesting point when he said: “… we shouldn’t only engage in the joyful moments, but also in the reflection caused afterward.”
It is precisely the reflection that allows these experiences to become meaningful to us.

A spontaneous hug from a child, our pet’s enthusiasm when we return home, the burble of the coffee maker in the morning or the very moment when your favorite team scores they all can become a special moment.

How can you created and enjoy more small joys in your life? Following are some things you could try:

1.Be present. Instead of always thinking what is the next thing on our list, being in the present will allow us to recognize and value those little but significant moments.

2.Embrace it. Other important thing to do when these moments appears is to stay with it. By fully experience it will deeper it in our self.

3.Remembering the details. Remind yourself how it makes you feel and also paying attention to the details will enhance the experience every time you recall it. The smell, the color, the sounds, the surrounding, the weather your feelings, etc.

4.Make a note of it. Writing it down in your journal or send yourself a postcard if you are traveling will remind you later about that wonderful experience you had in your last trip.

5. Cultivate those moments. Do things you love, bike along the waterfront, go out into the woods and take pictures, sit down and read your favorite book

I personally like 1000 Awesome Things because in that blog you will find a lot of samples of those very moments that can occurs in our daily life and also happen to others people too.

We all know that we never should drink and drive because it can cause fatalities that can cost our life or someone else life. However, today I will talk about the other drink and drive that can also cause accidents.

I remembered long time ago when we were going for a trip with my family and I was drinking my coffee while I was driving. At that moment my older son said loud half complaining half commenting what he had just read in one of the highway’s sign: “Don’t drink and drive”. Even though my wife and I smiled for his comments I though that he actually was absolutely right about the chance of having an accident while someone behind the wheel is drinking a coffee.

So I decided that I should never drink my coffee while I am driving and that’s has been the rule since. As a secondary effect, I cut off my drinking habit and no longer drink coffee in the morning. Improving health, save some money and more important driving safe.

Back home he was a mechanical engineer who due to the circumstances of that time he had to start doing this kind of part time job at the beginning but later on it became a very well paid full time work.

At that time very few people could afford the kind of custom made decorations made by him but the few who had access to paid very good for this kind of artistic metal work.
While I was looking his work and the level of detail he was putting into his work, I was thinking to myself how people can adapt to situations life put us on front and somehow come out with an original alternative.

Well there is the transferable skills, the actitude to take action but also the pasion for what you do. I could easily see in his face the pleasure to do something very good, no leaving anything randomly. When he was doing the final touches of paiting with his paint gun, I notice him adjusting his sights by closing a little bit his eyes like he was adjusting the focus of a camera lense. Also by changing different position to have different angles of the piece of metal he was painting even though the baranda color was white.

You can call it being professional with his job and responsible in the quality he delivers. However, I am pretty sure it was more than that. Did I tell you that this was not a regular paid work but a service exchange?

The product is called Evernote a very useful external brain (does how they call it) where you can store text, image, sound, web pages, pdf files, spreadsheet, etc. The application also has a mobile version for Android, iPhone, BlackBerry, Palm, Windows and Mac and most recently iPad.
You could actually retrieve any stored information anywhere and anytime as well as capture anything you might find useful. By applying tag you can even set subcategories that can help you retrieve information better. Most of the features come with the free version; however, the premium version give extra features such as optical character recognition in your PDF files, https encryption, extra limit to upload files, among others. One of the thing I recently started to do is selecting recipes from different bloggers and saving it in my recipes folders that help me build my weekly menu. An excellent tool I highly recommend it.
